Do you know that there are towns in Canada that are not just so pleasant to hear? You may find it weird and hard to believe but yes, it is true. To begin with, read on the list cause you might be just one in these places:

10. Conception Bay, Newfoundland

This bay might rock, but surely you’ll get knocked. Located in Newfoundland, Conception Bay is named after the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. But, this bay had not yet lived up to its popular root name because the last time it hit the news was way ago in the second world war when Nazi U-boats bombed and destroyed local cargo ships in the area.

9. Shag Harbor, Nova Scotia

This place gained its popularity not only because of its vulgar meaning but also because this is where a UFO sighting was recorded in 1967 when inconspicuous blinking lights had been seen. Locals heard a crash of an aircraft into the water and reported the incident in the RCMP. There had been mysterious lights flashing on the water when the authorities arrived. If, indeed there were aliens in the place, would you want to join in the party?

8. Saint-Louis-Du-Ha!-Ha! Quebec

Who would have seriously thought that Saint-Louis-du-Ha!-Ha! Exist? A parish municipality found in the southeast wing of Quebec, its root is still not unanimously identified. Some say that it came from First Nations’ word and some says that Ha! Ha! It was incorporated due to people’s expression when they see the nearby lake. But, what is unanimous is that Saint-Louis-du-Ha!-Ha! Sounds hilarious!

7. Climax, Saskatchewan

Though the meaning seemingly unrefined, this place is a hospitable town resided by Canadians and surrounded majestically by beautiful scenery. Tourists might find it awkward but there is a road sign saying “Come again”; by then you might be having a second trip through this beautiful town.

6. Dildo, Newfoundland

Its meaning might be coarse nowadays; but when this place derived its name it was innocently named after a pin found in a rowboat—a shrub. Because of the rude meaning it has coined, there have been numerous movements to change the name of the place; however, it still remained as it is today—a pretty nonsensical move if you will ask us.

5. Swastika, Ontario.

Nobody will agree that Swastika is a good name for a town. But, there had been a town named after as such, which derived its name after a train station constructed in 1908, way back before the Nazi era. Different from Ontario’s Town of Berlin which changed its name to Kitchener on WW1, the town’s name survived up to the present despite the alarm it poses to tourists and locals from neighboring towns.

4. Crotch Lake, Ontario

Crotch Lake is named and coined as a ridiculous derivation. However, it has been viewed as a place to be visited at the nether region in the North Frontenac Park Lands. The hike in the wilderness and the 77 nearby campsite as well as the refreshing clear water is something that always excites tourists. Surely, you will be in the go to try this Crotch Lake experience.

3. Vulcan, Alberta

Geeks will be disappointed to know that this Albertan town was not coined after the famous Star Trek’s Spock; but it is a favorite venue of fanatics of Star Treks in the region. To live up to its famous root, the town has constructed a Star Trek tourist station and Starship Enterprise replica—attracting Trek’s fanatic over to visit the town.

2. Balls Falls, Ontario

Do you want to roll over a falls? Literally named as Balls, there is an amazing fall found in the Niagara region in Southern Ontario. Packaged with this is a ghost town which started in the 1800s and this seemingly hilarious named-falls is among the many tourist spots found in the area. To wit, Balls Falls’ name derivation is not yet clear, but hopefully, it was not derived from an accident or tragedy whatsoever.

1. Red Head Cove, Newfoundland

Really this place was named as such due to the red head congregate from the north that used to gather in the area way back before, to discuss various significant matters that includes looking for the best offerings for sunblock and finding ways to control tempers and the likes.

Although castles are not very famous these days, apart from the cultural aspects, they made the best real estate back then. Let’s go through some interesting facts about castles.

10. The construction material: The first castles were made of wood, and usually were built on a mound. It was a clever idea since the enemies had to hike up to reach the castle. A draw back was about using wood was that the walls surrounding the castle and the castle itself was all wooden which could easily be set on fire.

9. Toilets: There were no proper toilets in castles, rather a small construction called “garderboes” were made where a person would aim the waste through a hole. The name was given as people places their clothing in Garderobe as the odor of the place repels insects.

8. Defense: The architecture of castles was such to suit the attacking position of the army. Every design was meant to keep the enemy away. Murder holes were made to pour liquid in case enemies enter the castle. It would be foolish of a person to approach a castle without asking.

7. Oldest Castle: Windsor Castle is still inhabited but Queen Elizabeth II. Like many old castles, it was made of wooden motte-and-bailey- type but it had been reconstructed and few additions were made under William I.

6. Castles Galore: However the exact definition of a castle is still a debate and it is not distinctively defined so far. Although, there are 15000 castle sites in England and Wales, some of them are ruins, some still intact and some are remnants.

5. Staircases in castles: As every other design in the castle, the staircase case was also a defense design. It was always spiral and clockwise; the purpose behind such a design was to give disadvantage to the army who usually are right handed, and the residents descending down will have an upper hand.

4. Food as an entertainment: Food was the only source of entertainment in castles. Outdoor activities included hunting and combat training; however indoor was a completely bleak. One way to escape the boredom was feast full of food and drinks.

3. Uncomfortable environment: We always think of lavish features of castles when think about castles however the smell and the bleakness of the castle are always undermined. Castles were usually poorly lit, damp and no room for proper passage of air. They were built for defense purpose and were equipped accordingly. However, eventually people changed the interior and exterior designs to reflect the wealth of the residents.

2. Personal servants: Personal servants had a better life than other residents of lower social class. They slept in the same warm compartment where their master slept and were provided with better bed while other people in castle usually depended on body heat for warming.

1. The Well: The well was one of the weakest points of a castle. If enemies ever get hold of the well they could easily poison it and rendered the whole castle ran dry.

Sanchi, in Madhya Pradesh, is world famous for ruins of stupas, temples, and monasteries that lie scattered across a lonely hill. It is the oldest and largest Buddhist sanctuary in India. The stupa was originally a burial or reliquary mound, but later became a purely symbolic structure.

The best known and most elaborate amongst the stupas at Sanchi is the Great Stupa. It is part of entire complex of structures, mostly stupas, built between 3rd century BC and 12th century AD. The great stupa of Sanchi is the oldest stone structure in India. It was commissioned by Emperor Ashoka the Great in 3rd century BC. Four elaborately carved gateways were added in first century BC.

The road to and from the historical site, as well as its rail access are kept neat and clean and the Govt of Madhya Pradesh and the accommodations around it are a treat after the trek around the Stupa site.

9. Kaziranga National Park

The Kaziranga National Park is in Assam on the banks of mighty Brahmaputra River. It is the oldest park in Assam. The park is made up of swamps, and tall thickets of elephant grass. The grasslands are interspersed with open forests and interconnecting streams and lakes, making it ideal habitat of one-horned Rhinoceros.

More than 15 species of threatened mammals can be found here. It also boasts of world’s largest population of Indian rhinoceros and Indian elephant. Thousands of migratory birds-over a hundred species of them-flock to park seasonally.

Hire a cottage in the park to spend some time in the wild and take elephant rides in the park’s lush green environs.

8. Ajanta Caves

The Ajanta Caves are situated north of Aurangabad in Maharashtra. They get their name from the village of Ajanta located nearby.

There are 31 caves in all, and it is believed that they were carved in 2nd century BC as a retreat for Buddhist monks during rainy season.

The Ajanta Caves are important because they include paintings and sculptures considered to be masterpiece of Buddhist religious art. The paintings in Ajanta Caves depict different incidents in life of Buddha, as well contemporary events and social life.

7. Ellora Caves

The Ellora Caves are a series of ancient temples and monasteries hewn into the side of Charnadari Hill in Deccan plateau. Historically speaking, the emergence of Ellora Caves coincided with decline of Buddhism and a Hindu renaissancein AD 7th and 9th centuries in India.

The Ellora caves fall into three distinct groups, Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain. There are twelve Buddhist caves, and the first nine Buddhist caves are variations of viharas, filled with figures of Lord Buddha, and scenes from Buddhist mythology. The Hindu caves are seventeen in number and represent peak of Ellora’s development. There are five Jain caves. They are simpler than other caves but are just as inspiring with elephants and lions coming to life in their depths.

6. Group of Monuments at Hampi

The story of Hampi is the amazing saga of how a tiny hamlet grew into the sprawling medieval metropolis that was the capital of grand Vijayanagar Empire.

In course of time, the Vijayanagar armies suffered heavy losses, and its capital city was plundered. The once glorious capital city turned into ghost city. Currently Hampi’s monuments-hundreds of them- are popular among tourists and pilgrims. Hampi was declared World Heritage Site in 1986.

5. Konark Sun Temple

The Sun Temple is built to resemble the Sun God’s chariot. It has 24 wheels with spokes sculpted with symbols that represent cycle of seasons, and the months. There are seven stone horses that appear to be pulling the chariot. However, the rest of the temple follows the plan of traditional Orissa Temples. The exquisite carvings on outer walls and the free standing sculptures make this temple truly a tribute to artisans of Orissa.

4. Fatehpur Sikri

Fatehpur Sikri was built by the Emperor Akbar in 1571. The work, supervised by Akbar himself, was completed in 1573.

The city compromised of a series of palaces, public buildings and mosques, as well as living areas for the court, the army, servants of the king and his people. In 1585, however, Akbar abandoned the city to fight against Afghans and chose new capital. Though it had short life of splendor, Fatehpur Sikri has remained till date as one of the most magnificent and well-preserved heritage sites in India.

3. Sunderbans National Park

Sunderbans is a national park, UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a tiger reserve in West Bengal. It is located at the southern tip of West Bengal, where land meets the sea. About half of Sunderbans is under water, and rest of the landscape is characterized by low-lying mangroves, alluvial plains, and mud banks, with sandy beaches and dunes along the coast.

There is a rich variety of wildlife in Sunderbans. Sunderbans is a heaven for birdwatchers too.

2. Khajuraho

Khajuraho was the first capital of the Chandelas, who ruled Bundelkhand from 10th to 14th centuries. The Khajuraho temples are very different from normal temples in India, because emphasis is on stunning architecture, sculpture, and art of period more than on religion, deities, and worship.

It took them more than 200 years to build them. The Khajuraho temples are a tribute to the north Indian Nagara architectural style. These extraordinary temples rise, spire upon spire like mirage. Khajuraho has largest group of medieval Hindu and Jain temples that are famous for their sculpture as well as architecture.

1. Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal is an inspiring monument built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan between 1631 and 1648, as a tribute to the memory of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died in 1631. It is believed that thousands of workers from different countries toiled for 17 years to complete it. Built completely of white marble and exquisitely designed, it is more than a ruler’s achievement or a nation’s pride.

The Taj Mahal is most flawless architectural creations of all time. For, past five centuries, travelers from all over the world have gazed in awe at its incomparable beauty. Situated on right bank of Yamuna River, the Taj Mahal gleams like a jewel in the perfect setting of its vast garden.

Before the British left, India was divided into large number of provinces, many of them under rule of local princes. This mammoth task of Indian unification was carried out by Sardar Vallabhai Patel, assisted by V.P. Menon, secretary of Ministry of States.

Later the nation was divided into number of states based on their language. Through this article, we look at ten most recent states to emerge on map of India.

1. Jharkhand (2000)

The state of Jharkhand existed and was distinct in its identity from ancient times. During Mughal period, Jharkhand was known as Kukara. After the year1765, it came under control of British Empire and became formally known as Jharkhand. When India became independent, it was part of Bihar. In August 2000, the parliament of India passed Bihar Reorganization Bill, which carved 18 districts out of Bihar to form Jharkhand. On 15 November 2000, Jharkhand became 28th state of India.

2. Uttarakhand (2000)

In the 19th century, the British annexed the Gurkha Empire, and along with it, the area that now forms Uttarakhand. Uttarakhand was part of Uttar Pradesh, and on 9th November 2000, it became the 27th state of Indian Union.

3. Chhattisgarh (2000)

In ancient times, Chhattisgarh was called Dakshin Kosala. Chhattisgarh remained part of every empire that ruled the country, right from days of great Magadha Empire. The English reorganized the mineral wealth of the area.

In recent times, the state of Chhattisgarh has been carved out of Madhya Pradesh on November 1, 2000.

4. Goa (1987)

The history of Goa dates back to 3rd century BC. Goa has an endless list of rulers who have ruled this state through ages. The 14th century saw Goa gradually becoming a trade centre. However, things started to change in 1510 AD, when the Portuguese arrived in Goa.

During the spice trade, Goa reached its golden age, and old Goa became biggest city in east. Though India earned her independence in 1947, Goa remained a Portuguese colony.

In 1961, the former prime minister, Jawahar Lal Nehru sent armed forces to Goa. The Indian army took over Goa in just two days. Goa became one of Union territories along with Daman and Diu. In 1987, on 30th May, Goa became a separate state while Daman and Diu were made separate Union Territory.

5. Arunachal Pradesh (1987)

The history of Arunachal Pradesh is rich in myths and legends. The recorded history of Arunachal Pradesh is available only from the 16th century onwards. Its modern history begins with imposition of British rule on Assam in 1826. Before 1962, Arunachal was popularly called the North Eastern Frontier Agency and was constitutionally part of Assam. The Ministry of External Affairs administered it until 1965, and subsequently the Ministry of Home Affairs through the governor of Assam. In 1972, it was constituted as Union Territory and renamed as Arunachal Pradesh. On 20th February in 1987, it became the 24th state of the Indian Union.

6. Mizoram (1986)

Not much of Mizoram’s early history is recorded. It is believed that Mizos migrated to this region hundreds of years ago. Mizoram became a part of British India in 1981, though the administration of the villages was left to local chieftains. After India became independent, Mizoram continued to be part of Assam. In 1961, the Mizo National Font was formed with the aim of achieving the independence of Greater Mizoram. As a result, the district was carved out of Assam and raised to the status of Union Territory on January 21, 1972. In 1987, Mizoram became the 23rd full-fledged state of the country.

7. Sikkim (1975)

After India’s independence, Sikkim became a protectorate of India. The role of India became increasingly crucial, Chinese’s military built-up along the northern borders that culminated in actual invasion in 1960s. The king, Palden Thondup Namgyal then gave in to the demands of his people, and Sikkim became 22nd state of India.

8. Manipur, Tripura & Meghalaya (1972)

In 1949, Manipur merged with independent India, and 21st January 1972 was granted statehood.

After the independence of India, Tripura merged with Indian Union. It became a Union territory of the country from November 1st, 1956. On January 21st, 1972, Tripura became an independent state of Indian Union.

When India became independent it was included in the state of Assam for administrative reasons. This led to agitation by the local population. The region was accorded full statehood on January 21st, 1972.

9. Himachal Pradesh (1971)

According to Mahabharta, the present day state was made of number of small republics. Later, the region came under the rule of Gupta Emperor, and after its collapse it was ruled by Mughals. Ranjit Singh captured some part of the area in 19th century. The Gorkhas were in power for a while till British subjugated the Gorkha tribe, and captured some parts of the region. After independence, Himachal Pradesh came into being as Union territory when more than 30 princely states were integrated in 1948. Late in 1966, hilly areas of Punjab were merged with the state increasing its size. Himachal Pradesh became a full-fledged state of India on 25th January, 1971.

10. Haryana (1966)

The area was ceded to British in 1803. In 1832, it was transferred to the North-Western Provinces and in 1858; Haryana became a part of Punjab, remaining as such after partition of India in 1947.

The demand for Haryana as separate state was raised even before India’s independence in 1947, and Haryana became India’s state on 1st November 1966. Haryana as carved out of mostly Hindi-speaking eastern portion of Punjab, while mostly Punjabi-speaking western portion remained as present-day Punjab. The city of Chandigarh was made Union territory to serve as capital for both these states.

It is true that no place in the world is free of crime and there are always a few people, no matter how peace-loving the community is, who want to disrupt the law and order situation of that community. However, it is also true that some places are relatively more peaceful than others and you are less likely to be a victim of a crime in those areas. The recent economic recession has hit some areas hard and certain people have resorted to unfair means for gaining a financial edge over others. Below is a list of the 10 most dangerous cities of the USA.

10. Memphis, Tennessee

The state of Tennessee ranks as one of the most peaceful states of America. The city of Memphis however, came out to be above average when it came to the number of violent crimes and sex crimes per capita.

9. New Orleans, Louisiana

The Institute for Economics and Peace declared the city of New Orleans as one of the more peaceful areas of Minnesota. But these cities still made it on this list thanks to their high number of sex offenders per capita.

8. Fort Lauderdale, Florida

This city is known for its strict laws for sex offenders, which prevents them from going any closer than 1000 feet to schools, parks, playgrounds and public school bus stops. However, only 10 percent of the city is open to housing these criminals. This has caused them all to cluster together.

7. Kansas City, Missouri

This city has one of the highest arrest rates in the country with two to three arrests in the average week. The relatively high crime rate in this city has been associated with the drug called PCP, which makes its users unpredictable and violent.

6. Baltimore, Maryland

The city of Baltimore ranks sixth on our list of the most dangerous American cities because of its high number of sex crimes. If this wasn’t enough, the city recently saw a series of firebombs hitting random locations of the city, spreading fear and panic.

5. Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Even after a dip in the number of violent crimes in recent years, the city is still dangerous enough to rank fifth on our list. It is not a surprise because the state of Louisiana is known as one of the most dangerous of all.

4. St. Petersburg, Florida

Several factors were taken into account while compiling this list, including access to firearms and number of people behind bars per capita. St. Petersburg fared badly in all of those factors to earn a number four spot on this list.

3. Orlando, Florida

It may come as a surprise to a lot of people that the city which is home to Disney and Universal Studios would appear on this list. But thanks to constant increase in violent crimes in recent years, it is placed on number three.

2. St. Louis, Missouri

St. Louis was deemed satisfactory when it came to theft and violent crime, but the result for sex crimes was a lot less than satisfactory.

1. Wilmington, Delaware

This city managed to grab the top spot as the most dangerous city in America thanks to its percentage population which is behind bars.
