What strikes your mind when we talk about iconic villians of Bollywood? Is it their memorable dialogues and quotes?, is it their evil laugh?, or is it terror and appreciation that they left on our hearts with their few hours long characters. Whatever it is, it has managed to keep them alive even after decades of their appearance in the big screen though most of them have become content of humor now. Let us pay tribute to those characters that amused and scared us making us fall in love with thier venomous nature. Here is the list of top 10 villians that are alive even after their death in the movie. The greatest of all time.
10. Rahul Mehra of Darr – 1993
Though many might hate me for not having Shakaal or Kancha Cheena in this spot but with so many excellent negative roles depicted brilliantly by the actor, he at-least deserves one spot in the list. We all have been once mesmerized by this obsessive lover who goes to extreme extent for love. This is one of those characters who despite of their negative and villaneous nature manage to win the sympathy and appreciation of the audience, and the actor has given one of the iconic performances of his career. Shah Rukh Khan as the emotionally damaged Rahul Mehra, audience have no trouble recognizing this famous character from his stuttering in the movie, “k.k.k.ka Kiran” which will be unforgettaable in bollywood.
9. Loin of Kalicharan – 1976
“Sara sahar mujhe Loin ke naam se janta hai” and “Mona, sona kaha hai?” are the first things that comes to our mind when we are reminded of this epic villian. Played by Ajit Khan in the movie Kalicharan, this character went on to become one of the iconic villians in the industry. He was the sophisticated mafia version with his white suits and shoes with black sunglasses which will remain unforgetable.
8. Maharani of Sadak – 1991
The big portion of credit for the huge success of the movie “Sadak” goes to actor Sadashiv Amrapurkar for his portrayal of the eunuch, ‘Maharani’, an evil madam in charge of a brothel that employs innocent girls and forces them in the trade. It is indeed the landmark performance of the actor’s career and for the indutry as well that personafied such ruthless wicked minds that very much inhabit the society. The movie and the actor benefited from the character which won them many awards.
7. Jagira of China Gate – 1998
The movie is known for two things mostly than others, one is the famous song “Chamma Chamma” and another is for the feared bandit of the movie played by Mukesh Tiwari. A ruthless bandit in a remote village who terrorizes the locals and the authorities, the character infact seems very intimidating as brilliantly played by the actor which got him renowned and won him several awards. The disgusting apparel and ruthless nature of Jagira with a memorable dialogue dilivery makes him secure a spot on this list.
6. Gokul Pandit in Dushman – 1998
Now a character which not only terrorized the audience but the very profession he followed in the movie. For a certain time women were horrified if the sound from the other side of the door answered, “Postman”. We are talking about the Gokul Pandit of the 1998 Kajol and Sanjut Dutt starrer hit movie “Dushman”. The excellent portrayal of the rapist serial killer postman was more than brilliantly done by the actor Ashutosh Rana. It is one of those villains who do not necessarily hide in their underground secret hideout and order their henchmen to do their dirty work. The movie was a huge sucess which terrorized the population from the arrival of the postman in that time.
5. Dr. Dang in Karma – 1986
Dr. Dang is those villians of the late 80’s who commanded an army to fight for them but the portrayal of the character by veteran actor Anupam Kher gave it a distinct recognition that is apparent in bollywood even after two and a half decade. The merciless Dr. Dang and his famous dialogue ‘Thappar ki goonj’ will be forever remembered and loved by bollywood audience.
4. Lajja Shankar in Sangharsh – 1999
Here is someone who gave me nightmares when i watched the movie as a child. The psychological crime thriller movie revolves around a religious fanatic who believes in sacrifising children to gain immortality. The character is so horrific and ice-cold that it makes other villians look like pick-pockets. The very convincing performance of the actor with spine-chilling thrill and rush of the movie along with the terrifying howl of the character, made him an iconic villian in the industry. Though the quest for immortality ends with the death of the villian in the movie, the terrific portrayal of Lajja Shankar Pandey by the actor Ashutosh Rana made the character immortal in bollywood.
3. Sukhi lala in Mother India – 1967
This a one character which not necessarily is a work of fiction. Sukhi lala is a lecherous money lender who hails superior among the illeterate and poor villagers feeding on their inability to read and write and slowly leeching them on fake debts. The character depicts the true nature of many remote villages and their scenario where people suffer in the hands of such snivels. He is not big or strong but is more wicked than other villians in the list but just as venomous. Played by actor Kanhaiyalal also with same name in the movie but known as Sukhi lala, not a minute in the movie it seems that there was any acting involved. From a legendary movie in Bollywood “Mother India”, with a legendary villian deserves a place in this list.
2. Mogambo in Mr. India – 1987
Here is a name that will never go unrecognized it the industry or the audience. Mogambo is the supreme commander of who knows what organization that has plenty of nuclear missiles and more than plenty henchmen who bow to him shouting “Hail Mogambo”, ready to die at his disposal. The golden haired evil man with big terrorizing eyes and a evil laugh dressed in one of those Michael Jackson’s military like apparel remains one of the most unforgetable character in bollywood played by a brilliant and respected actor Amrish Puri. The role was a perfect match for the actor who even after his demise made the character immortal in the hearts of the audience. If he were here receiving all the praise he is entitled to then we would surely again hear him say, “Mogambo khus hua” in his heavy voice.
1. Gabbar Singh in Sholay – 1975
So, here we are and we all had a fair idea who is in this top spot. The unmatchable king of all negative characters that ever appeared in the big screen of Bollywood by all means is the dacoit, Gabbar Singh of the milestone movie Sholay. The popularity of Gabbar with his satanic laugh and timeless dialogues such as, “Arey O Sambha, kitney aadmi thei?”, “Holi kab hai holi?”, “Ye haath mujhe de de thakur”, “Jab tak tere pair challenge uski saans chalegi” or “Door kisi gaon mein jab baccha rota hai toh uski maa kehti hai, so ja beta nahin to gabber aa jaega”. There is no getting enough of these and certainly these are not the only ones. Amjhad Khan as “Gabbar Singh” will always reign supreme in this list for decades to come.
